Other Multi-Day Tour - 4 Days / 3 Nights August 14 - 17, 2008

Day #1 - Thursday, August 14th:

We'll head north of the Illinois State line into the rolling hills of Green County Wisconsin, where picturesque farmsteads dot the landscape, and they claim to have more dairy cows than people. Our first stop will be in Monroe, the capital of cheese country, where we'll visit the Historic Cheese making Center in the town's old depot. Enjoy a cheese sandwich at Baumgartner's, a historic tavern on the town square. Shop at Brennan's Market, and tour Roth K‰se Cheese Factory. Follow the cheese trail in the neighboring small towns, hitting the highlights of the cheese making tours & retail shopping as we make our way from Monroe to Swiss-themed New Glarus. Enjoy the evening meal* and rest in comfort at the Chalet Landhaus Inn*.

Day #2 - Friday, August 15th:

Continental Breakfast* is served at the hotel before we daytrip through the countryside to Dodgeville (headquarters of Land's End) and Plain, and visiting the best the area has to offer in the way of both hand-made & factory-made cheese, with the opportunity to sample and stock up your coolers. For lunch*, enjoy some country cooking at The Old Feed Mill, a lovingly restored Flour Mill, where the owners grow much of the produce they serve. Then, its on to Sauk City to Carr Valley Cheese for a cooking demonstration and cheese tasting* at the Carr Valley Cooking School. Friday evenings in Wisconsin mean "Fish Fry" and we're enjoying one of the best, beer-battered cod under a white tent on the paddock at Quivey's Grove. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Return to New Glarus, to enjoy the remainder of the evening at your leisure.

Day #3 - Saturday, August 16th:

A Full Breakfast Buffet* is included this morning before our early morning departure towards Madison, the capital city with a rich cultural heritage.

We will visit Dane County Farmers Market - one of the nation's oldest & largest Farmer's Markets. Only local vendors are permitted, offering the finest in produce, meats, cheeses and homemade baked goods. Shop the market at your leisure and enjoy lunch on your own. Mid-afternoon, we'll discover the Culinary Highlights of Madison, visiting unique & local markets. This evening we'll enjoy a very special dinner* served at Harvest, featuring organic and locally grown foods. Harvest has been featured in the October 2007 issue of Gourmet Magazine as one of America's best "farm-to-table" restaurants and also in the 2006 restaurant issue of Bon Appetite Magazine for featured chef. Restaurant operator Tami Lex founded the Madison chapter of slow food. After dinner, we'll return to the hotel.

Day #4 - Sunday, August 17th:

Another Full Breakfast Buffet* is served before we check out and depart for Mt. Horeb to visit the world famous Mustard Museum & Gourmet Foods Emporium, run by mustard man - Barry Levenson. Shop the retail store, where you'll find an amazing collection of over 4,000 bottles and jars of mustard. After visiting Mt. Horeb, we're off for neighboring Mineral Point, with its Cornish Mining Community Heritage and folksy art scene.
